Hello! Welcome to Spade and Trowel, a blog offering gardening advice and gardening secrets from an expert Australian Gardener. We are the dynamic mother daughter duo Helena and Frankie. A gardening expert excited to share her journey and a gardening novice ready to learn along the way.
Our house is in regional Victoria, Australia, and our garden is three years into a ten year plan. After that who knows? Probably more gardening. When we purchased the property the garden was dominated by agapanthus and vast stretches of kikuyu grass, really ‘just a yard’. Although we knew it would take a lot of work it was a brilliant blank canvas to start something inspiring we could truly call our own. Now creating a garden that provides for both the kitchen and the soul is our aim, with vegetables and fruit trees forming important elements in the garden and this blog.
Helena, the gardening guru, caught the green thumb at an early age. Her parents owned a flower farm supplying many florists with ferns, foliage and flowers across Melbourne and Victoria. Having worked on the farm, then in some of Melbourne’s boutique nurseries she transitioned to studying and starting a profession as a landscape architect. With a keen interest spreading the enjoyment of gardens with the wider community, when Helena isn’t busy in her own garden she is volunteering with the Friends of the Geelong Botanic Gardens and Open Gardens Australia. Helena is forever grateful for the garden she has and loves interesting and unusual plants, vegetable gardening and making good compost!
Frankie, a gardening novice, splits her time between studying at university in Melbourne and enjoying the garden at home. Definitely the Trowel to Helena’s Spade, Frankie is capable of growing a few veggies but also killing a few succulents. For Frankie, this blog is a way of helping Helena spread her gardening knowledge with the world and creating an opportunity for Helena’s gardening wisdom to be passed from mother to daughter.
Welcome to our Spade and Trowel, our gardening journey. We hope you love it as much as we do!
